RE-2 School Board Resolution Supporting Aquatics Center Ballot Initiative Passes Unanimously

RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE BALLOT INITIATIVE
TO DEVELOP A COMMUNITY-WIDE AQUATIC CENTER

WHEREAS, the Re-2 Board of Education is a public entity that provides educational services to children in the Woodland Park School District (WPSD); and

WHEREAS, Local voters will decide on ballot issue 2A this November to develop a community-wide aquatic center to promote the health, safety and general welfare of the Woodland Park community; and

WHEREAS, The WPSD has a District Wellness Committee (WELCO) that focuses on a “Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child” model with the mission to improve the climate of our schools and increase the academic achievement of our students through education, programs, services and activities that promote positive, healthy lifestyles, choices and habits; and

WHEREAS, Research continues to demonstrate the link between academic achievement and physical activity (children who are physically active have higher test scores, improved attention in class, decreased absenteeism, improved behavior, decreased stress and improved mood); and

WHEREAS, A community-wide aquatic center will provide a positive and healthy alternative activity, as well as jobs, for young adults and students; and

WHEREAS, A community-wide aquatic center will provide the opportunity for swimming lessons and water safety courses for children; and

WHEREAS, A community-wide aquatic center will provide the opportunity for low impact water exercise and therapy programs for adults, seniors and children with physical handicaps; and

WHEREAS, A community-wide aquatic center will provide training opportunities for all ages and levels of athletes to include competitive swimmers, triathletes and general cross training; and

WHEREAS, A community-wide aquatic center will assist in attracting and retaining families with school age children to the Woodland Park community and the RE-2 School District; and

WHEREAS, the development of a community-wide aquatic center will significantly benefit the greater Woodland Park community and, specifically, the children of the RE-2 School District by providing access to activities that promote positive, healthy lifestyles, choices and habits;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the RE-2 Board of Education officially declares its support of the ballot initiative to develop a community-wide aquatic center for the purpose of promoting the health, safety and general welfare of the Woodland Park community.
